The world paused on Monday, July 14, as news broke of the tragic passing of Fauja Singh, the world’s oldest marathon runner, who died at the age of 114 in a hit-and-run accident near his hometown in Beas, Punjab.

Singh, affectionately known across the globe as the “Turbaned Tornado,” was more than just an athlete , he was a symbol of resilience, hope, and the limitless nature of human spirit. Though he never held a Guinness World Record due to the absence of a birth certificate, his feats on the marathon trail have inspired generations, proving that age is never a barrier to greatness.

According to police reports, Singh was struck by an unknown vehicle while walking near his village. He was rushed to Shrimann Hospital in Jalandhar, where he succumbed to injuries sustained to his head and ribs. Authorities confirmed on Tuesday that a 26-year-old suspect , allegedly Amritpal Singh Dhillon had been arrested after CCTV footage led to his identification. Charges filed include negligent driving and culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The accused is believed to be based abroad, with family members residing in Canada.

Born in 1911 in rural India, Singh didn’t walk until the age of five due to frail legs, but went on to defy every odd. He took up long-distance running at the remarkable age of 89, after relocating to London following the loss of his wife and son.

“Running showed me kindness and brought me back to life by making me forget all my traumas and sorrows,” Singh once told CNN at the age of 102.

Singh completed his first marathon just months after beginning training, and in 2003, recorded a personal best of 5 hours and 40 minutes at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon. In 2011, he made history in the same city, becoming the first centenarian to officially complete a marathon, crossing the finish line in 8 hours, 11 minutes, and 6 seconds.

His achievements went far beyond medals and finish lines. They were stories of healing, cultural pride, and unshaken faith. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi led tributes, describing him as “an exceptional athlete with incredible determination.”

From rural fields in Punjab to global marathon podiums, Fauja Singh’s journey was nothing short of legendary. Though his earthly race has come to an end, his story will continue to run through the hearts of athletes and admirers around the world.

Rest in power!! Baba Fauja. You ran your race well.  All we have now are the memories and the lasting legacy left behind.
