The President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN, Emeka Rollas, has emphasized the need for Nollywood to transform from a loose association into a structured union.

This change, he believes, is essential for effectively representing actors’ interests and ensuring fair compensation and better protections.

Rollas who made this statement during an interview, highlighted the importance of reforms within the Nigerian film industry.

He noted that actor licensing is crucial in creating a regulated environment in Nollywood.

According to Rollas, the current lack of structure leaves Nigerian actors vulnerable, particularly when they fall ill and cannot access financial support.

He cited instances where “big names” in the industry struggle to receive help due to inadequate financial remuneration from their work.

Rollas stressed that the AGN aims to upgrade and unionize, adopting global best practices to create a more equitable and sustainable industry.

By doing so, the guild hopes to provide actors with better protections, fair compensation, and access to benefits such as royalties and residuals.

The AGN President’s call for reform is a significant step towards improving the livelihoods of Nigerian actors and promoting a more professional and sustainable film industry.
