A group of DStv sports journalists who were covering the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, were ambushed and kidnapped, Cyber Reporters report.
The Anambra State Police Command announced that six crew members had been rescued.
According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, the media team was kidnapped along the Isseke-Orlu Road in Ihiala Local Government Area on their way from Lagos to Uyo.
Following the event, joint security forces conducted a rescue operation, resulting in the safe return of six kidnapped journalists.
“Joint security forces have successfully rescued six members of the media crew who were abducted while traveling from Lagos to Uyo along the Isseke-Orlu Road in Ihiala,” Ikenga stated, according to Sahara Reporters.
The police official continued, “Meanwhile, operations for the probable rescue of the seventh crew member continue. Further developments will be communicated.
Meanwhile, Colin Udoh, a notable journalist and former employee of the TV station, verified that one of the team members had died.
He tweeted, “A journalist, one of my former SuperSport colleagues, was killed yesterday when members of the production crew for Friday’s game against Libya were kidnapped on their way to Uyo. Some of the crew have been freed, while at least 2 others are still unaccounted for.”
