Dangote Refinery has begun producing Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, from its 650,000 barrels per day facility in Lagos.

The refinery, owned by Aliko Dangote, rolled out its first batch of petrol on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s energy sector.

Dangote at a press conference assured that the petrol produced would be of top quality, matching global standards, and would help extend the life of vehicle engines.

The refinery, which started operations in December 2023, plans to reach full capacity by the end of the year and has already begun supplying diesel and aviation fuel.

Dangote highlighted the refinery’s potential to restore industry and manufacturing, promote import substitution, and help stabilize the naira and reduce inflation.

The rollout comes amidst ongoing fuel supply challenges faced by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, which has significant debt to petrol suppliers and faces logistics and other issues.

He said, “Today is a very special day because Nigeria has not produced petrol, which is gasoline, for many years.

“I want to salute the people of Nigeria and the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for creating the environment for us to thrive.”
