Two Nigerian students have won two silver medals in this year’s Pan African Mathematics Olympiad, PAMO.
The competition which took place in Johannesburg, South Africa, saw Elvis Chiedozie Ekwelem from Rivers State and Oghenerukevwe Patrick Esemitodje from Lagos State win two silver medals for Nigeria in the annual continental mathematics contest.
The annual event brought together young intelligent African students from over 20 countries on the continent.
The host and Vice Chancellor of the University of Witwatersrand, Zeblon Vilakazi, applauded Nigerian students for their exceptional intellectual rigidity, dedication, and talent.
Vilakazi stated that the competition is intended to promote and encourage academic excellence and research among young African mathematical scholars.
He noted that this year’s PAMO had 20 countries in attendance, with eight others participating virtually.
The professor emphasized that the exceptional performance of the Nigerian student contingent shows that they were in-depth in their knowledge of the subject.
He further stressed that the students demonstrated the willingness, eagerness, and commitment to excel in the subject at the continental level and are therefore bright candidates for the future development of the subject.
