SERAP to sue Akpabio over ‘Enjoyment allowance’ announcement

Reacting to the viral “holiday token” video from the national assembly, The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has threatened to file a lawsuit against Senate President Godswill Akpabio concerning the disbursement of “holiday allowances” to senators by the Clerk of the National Assembly.

SERAP via a statement through its official twitter handle, disclosed its decision to sue the Senate President who had made a rather controversial announcement on the floor of the house, on Monday during plenary.

“We’re suing the Senate President Godswill Akpabio over the alleged payments of “holiday allowances” by the Clerk of the National Assembly into the “various accounts” of senators while some 137 million poor Nigerians face severe economic hardship,”

SERAP stated.

The Senate Presidents revelation has left most Nigerians bewildered, owing to to the fact that amidst the current hardship on average citizens, the senate has the luxury of ‘holiday enjoyment’ allowance.

However, the move signifies rising tension and scrutiny over the management of public funds, especially in the light of the present economic climate.

While The Senate President is yet to release an official statement on the issue, tons of Nigerians across board have registered their displeasure over the viral video.

Also, a sitting senator from the FCT, elected under the platform of the Labor Party Sen. Ireti Kingibe has revealed that the member of the National assembly actually receive some jumbo allowances.

She however also said she did not receive any prayers from the senate president in her mail box.
