The Premier League has confirmed that the traditional Boxing Day fixture list in English football has been reduced to just one match on 26 December 2025.

According to BBC Sports on Friday, as a result of the new development, Manchester United vs. Newcastle United will be the only match to feature on Boxing Day due to the expansion of European club competitions.

Boxing Day has been a cornerstone of English football culture for over a century, typically featuring a full round of Premier League fixtures, a festive highlight for fans, families, and television audiences worldwide.

However, in 2025, the day falls on a Friday, and due to a combination of structural changes in football’s calendar, only one top-flight game will be played.

The Premier League would like to acknowledge the circumstances that have led to a reduced number of matches on Boxing Day this season – impacting an important tradition in English football,” the league said while confirming the schedule for this year’s festive fixtures.

“There are now several challenges to Premier League fixture scheduling rooted in the expansion of European club competitions, which led to a revision of our domestic calendar ahead of last season, including changes to the FA Cup.

“This ultimately left the Premier League as a 33-weekend competition – fewer than previous seasons, despite being a 380-match competition since 1995.
