Liverpool and Portugal forward, Diogo Jota, aged 28, loses life in a horrific car accident in Spain.

The deadly accident occurred around kilometre 65 of the A-52 motorway near the community of Palacios de Sanabria in Zamora province. He was travelling with his brother Andre – a 26-year-old footballer – when the car went off-road.

Jota, born in 1996, was an important player for both Liverpool FC and the Portuguese national team. The news of his tragic death has sent shockwaves throughout the football world and beyond.

The tragedy comes just after Jota married his long-term girlfriend Rute Cardoso in Porto in an extravagant ceremony on June 22. The couple have three children together.

The Spanish sports newspaper MARCA reported the incident on Thursday, confirming Jota’s death at the scene.

“Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota dies in a traffic accident in the province of Zamora,” the outlet said in a brief statement, grieving the talented player’s death.

Liverpool FC’s striker had been with the club since 2020. He was a prolific goal scorer, scoring nine times last season as the Reds won the Premier League. Jota scored 65 goals in 182 games with the club.  Jota was well-known for his determination, goal-scoring ability, and adaptability on the pitch.

As of press time, no further details about the crash or funeral preparations had been revealed.
