Michael Slater, a former cricket player for Australia, pleaded guilty to domestic abuse charges and was given a four-year prison sentence with some suspension.

The 55-year-old will be released, though, having already spent more than a year behind bars after being denied bail in 2024.

Slater entered a guilty plea to two counts of common assault, one count of unlawful striking, one act of assault causing bodily harm, burglary, and two counts of strangling. Slater played 74 Test matches for Australia from 1993 to 2001.

Judge Glen Cash told Slater “alcoholism is part of your make-up” and that his rehabilitation will “not be easy”.

“It’s obvious that you are an alcoholic,” Judge Cash said.

Slater slumped and had to be assisted to his feet by prison authorities after a Queensland judge denied him release in April 2024.

He has stayed in detention for slightly over a year.  A Sydney judge sentenced Slater to a two-year community corrections order in 2022 after he pleaded guilty to crimes including common assault and attempted stalking of a lady.
