Former Manchester United academy midfielder, Joe Thompson has died at the age of 36.

His previous club, Rochdale, said it was “devastated” to hear of his passing on Friday.

According to a statement released by Rochdale, the former midfield player passed away “peacefully at home with his family by his side” on Thursday.

Thompson made almost 200 appearances for Rochdale after joining from Manchester United’s academy in 2005.

The club paid respect on X, calling its former midfielder as “a warm personality who had a deep connection with our club from a young age”.

Thompson retired from pro football in 2019.  He got diagnosed with cancer for the third time in 2024.
