Nigerian table tennis star Quadri Aruna began his 2025 ITTF World Cup campaign in Macao, China, with a thrilling 3-1 win over Benin’s Abdel-Kader Salifou.

Cyber Reporters reports that the match was a rematch of their ITTF African Cup encounter, showcasing the competitive spirit of both players.

Aruna, ranked 20th in the world, effectively maintained his composure in critical moments, overcoming an 8-6 deficit in the fourth game to secure the win.

“It’s always challenging to play the first match in such events,” Aruna said. “Establishing a 2-0 lead gave me confidence… I’m pleased with how I performed today.”

Salifou, despite the defeat, displayed commendable determination, leading 8-6 in the fourth game before Aruna rallied back.

“I had opportunities to level the match… I appreciate Aruna’s ability to rally back,” Salifou said.

Other notable performances on the first day included Egypt’s Hana Goda, who convincingly defeated Malaysia’s Seak Hui Li 4-0, and Dina Meshref, who secured a 3-1 win against Zhu Chengzhu.

The day also featured impressive wins from Japan’s Hiroto Shinozuka, Croatia’s Tomislav Pucar, and China’s Huang Youzheng.

A surprise 2-2 draw between Eugene Wang and Yukiya Uda added to the excitement.
