Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley has urged Portugal manager Roberto Martinez to drop Cristiano Ronaldo from the starting lineup, citing the 40-year-old’s declining performance.

Burley believes Ronaldo’s age and recent struggles in major tournaments make him a liability for Portugal Cyber Reporters reports.

Despite Ronaldo’s impressive goal-scoring record, Burley points to his struggles in the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Euros as evidence that he can no longer lead the line for Portugal.

Burley suggests that Martinez’s continued selection of Ronaldo lacks foresight and may ultimately harm the team’s chances.

Burley’s comments come after Portugal’s 5-2 win over Denmark in the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals.

Ronaldo scored Portugal’s second goal but also missed a penalty in the opening minutes.

Burley wonders whether a 41-year-old Ronaldo will be able to keep up with the demands of the 2026 World Cup.

He recommends that Martinez consider benching Ronaldo, despite the potential pressure and controversy that may follow.

Burley believes that Portugal has the talent to succeed without relying on Ronaldo, and that it’s time for the team to move forward without their aging star.
