Italian professional football club, AC Milan has fired coach Paulo Fonseca on Monday after the Italian club failed to make a persistent drive for Champions League spots in Serie A.

The 51-year-old Portuguese manager had pre-empted the announcement by announcing his dismissal as he exited the San Siro after his press conference following Sunday’s stalemate with AS Roma.

Sergio Conceicao, his compatriot, is anticipated to replace the former Shakhtar Donetsk, Roma, and Lille coach.

The 1-1 draw was their sixth of the season, leaving them in seventh place, eight points behind Lazio in fourth and last Champions League slot, and 12 behind city rivals Inter, who are vying for the title.

“AC Milan announces that Paulo Fonseca has been relieved from his duties as Head Coach of the Men’s First Team,” read a statement from the club.

“The Club extends its gratitude to Paulo for his great professionalism and wishes him the very best in his future endeavours.”
