President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Super Eagles striker Ademola Lookman and Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka on winning the 2024 CAF Men’s African Footballer of the Year and Women’s National Team of the Year, respectively.
The CAF announced the awards on Monday night in Marrakech’s Palais des Congrès.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said Tinubu joins millions of Nigerians in celebrating these athletes, characterising them as worthy ambassadors for showing their talent and bringing respect to the country on the continental and global stages.
He stated that the President hopes that this recognition by Africa’s highest football authority will motivate other aspiring athletes to persevere in following their aspirations.
According to the spokeswoman, Tinubu stated that their tenacity, discipline, and confidence demonstrate the administration’s commitment to creating a better Nigeria where everyone thrives and succeeds.
He cited the president as stating, ‘‘These athletes exemplify the core Nigerian character.
They represent the best aspects of our nation. Let no one write us off. I’m immensely proud of them.
‘‘Thank you for making Nigeria proud and keeping our flag flying.
‘‘Thank you for winning medals for Nigeria both at home and abroad. You will win more in the future.’
