Tragedy struck in N’Zerekore, Guinea’s second-largest city, during a football match, resulting in the loss of numerous lives.

Hospital sources reported that several people died amid clashes between fans, with healthcare facilities overwhelmed by casualties.

According to a doctor in Guinea, who wished to remain anonymous, there were approximately 100 fatalities, with numerous bodies seen in both the hospital and the morgue.

Reports say another medical professional corroborated this, mentioning “dozens of dead”. The exact number of casualties is still unclear, but it is evident that the situation is dire.

The chaos erupted after a disputed referee decision, which led fans to storm the pitch. The situation escalated, with protesters vandalizing and setting fire to the N’Zerekore police station.

Videos shared on social media showed chaotic scenes outside the match, with multiple bodies visible on the ground, although these clips have not been independently verified.

Cyber Reporters reports that the match was part of a tournament organized in honor of Guinea’s junta leader, Mamadi Doumbouya.

Doumbouya’s leadership has faced criticism for its crackdown on dissent, with many opposition figures detained or forced into exile.

The tournament was seen as an attempt to boost Doumbouya’s popularity ahead of next year’s presidential elections.

Doumbouya’s ascent to power in Guinea followed the overthrow of President Alpha Conde, who had placed him in charge of an elite protective force.

Despite his initial commitment to return governance to a civilian authority by the end of 2024, Doumbouya has since indicated he may extend military control.

The situation in Guinea remains tense, with many calling for calm and an investigation into the violence.

The international community is also watching closely, with concerns about the country’s stability and human rights record.
