The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has placed the former governor of Edo State Godwin Obaseki on watch list, Cyber Reporters report.

The anti-graft agency has launched an inquiry into transactions, including contracts issued during his term as governor of Edo State, a Punch correspondent gathered.

Obaseki, who resigned from government on November 12 following an eight-year stint, has previously stated that the EFCC intended to arrest him shortly after leaving office.

His successor, Monday Okpebholo, has recently appointed a 14-member State Assets Verification Committee to investigate his term.

Similarly, on November 2, the EFCC detained five Edo government officials who worked for Obaseki, including the Accountant General, Julius Anelu, over large withdrawals from the state treasury over a short period.

The former governor stated that he was willing to testify before the anti-corruption bureau at his time.

However, top commission officials, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to talk on the topic, claimed that thus far, the majority of transactions during Obaseki’s administration had not been directly linked to him.

The source said, “An investigation has commenced on his administration. He can’t just be invited until the work has got to a certain stage. Some team of crack investigators have been assigned to the case and have been trying to unravel some of the transactions including contracts awarded under his administration.

“The bulk of the transactions, you can’t trace it to him. He made use of others. There have been leads which we have been following and we hope to get something substantial.”
