Senate Removes Danladi Umar as CCT Chairman Amid Controversy

The Nigerian Senate has ousted Danladi Umar as Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, in a decisive move.

Cyber Reporters gathered that this drastic measure followed a closed-door session where an overwhelming 84 out of 107 serving Senators signed off on his removal.

The Senate invoked Section 157(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers them to remove the head of any statutory body accused of gross misconduct or misdemeanor – provided two-thirds of the Senate membership agrees.

Cyber Reporters reports that Danladi Umar’s tenure has been marred by controversy, notably his handling of the Justice Onnoghen case in 2019.

At the time, the CCT, under Umar’s leadership, issued an order suspending the then Chief Justice of Nigeria without determining its jurisdiction.

This move sparked intense debate and criticism.

The Senate’s action marks a significant development in the ongoing efforts to address allegations of misconduct within key institutions.

With Umar’s removal, the stage is set for a potential overhaul of the CCT and a renewed focus on accountability.
