Nigerian football legend Mutiu Adepoju has thrown his weight behind Augustine Eguavoen, urging the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, to retain him as the Super Eagles’ head coach.

Cyber Reporters reports that Eguavoen took charge in September and has since impressed with his team’s performance.

Under Eguavoen’s guidance, the Super Eagles secured qualification for AFCON 2025 with an impressive record of three wins, two draws, and one defeat.

This achievement has earned him praise from Adepoju, who believes his former teammate has done exceptionally well.

“I would rate him very well,” Adepoju said in an interview. “Number one, we’ve qualified for the AFCON, which is one of the objectives.”

Adepoju’s endorsement is a significant boost for Eguavoen, who faces uncertainty over his future despite his success.

Reports suggest the NFF is still considering hiring a foreign coach for the three-time African champions.

However, Adepoju argues that Eguavoen deserves to stay, citing his impressive performance and the team’s progress under his leadership.

“I believe he’s getting things done,” Adepoju said. “Let’s just keep supporting him.”

With Adepoju’s backing, pressure is mounting on the NFF to reconsider their plans and give Eguavoen the opportunity to continue building on his success with the Super Eagles.
