Sixty-eight associates of former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, including political appointees, local government chairmen, aides, and allies, have secured a protective court order from the Edo State High Court.

This interim injunction prevents the Nigerian Police from arresting them in connection with a petition filed by the Acting State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in July.

The associates, represented by counsel Olayiwola Afolabi SAN, filed suit B/266M/2024 against the Inspector General of Police, Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Force CID Abuja), and the Police Service Commission, PSC.

The court granted their request for protection from arrest pending the case’s determination.

Cyber Reporters gathered that this is not the first time an Edo State politician has sought court protection.

Previously, Hon. Dr. Kelly Inedegbor, Chairman of Esan North-East Local Government Area, obtained an interim court injunction restraining the Inspector General of Police and agents from arresting him

In granting their request, Justice A. T. Momodu ruled that:

“An order of interim injunction is hereby made restraining the respondents either by themselves, police officers in their department and/or any police officer acting under their instruction from inviting, arresting and detaining the applicants in any of respondents office, in respect of the petition written by the chairman of All Progressives Congress (Edo State) dated 18/07/2024 to the 1st respondent pending the hearing and determination of the originating Motion filed by the applicants in the enforcement of their fundamental human right.

“It is further ordered that the enrolled order of The order be served along with the originating motion on the respondents.”
