Ijaw stakeholders, led by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, seek compensation for environmental pollution caused by oil corporations operating in the state, Cyber Reporters report.

Diri stated that the group made the demand through the Bayelsa Oil and Pollution Commission’s study, “An Environmental Genocide: Counting the Human and Environmental Cost of Oil in Bayelsa, Nigeria,” which was handed to the president.

Diri made the remarks while interacting with State House media after visiting President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday.

He stated that the report published by the Bayelsa State Oil & Environmental Commission underlined the issues that Bayelsa communities experienced as a result of oil spills and environmental deterioration.

The governor said to President Tinubu: “We seek your support in implementing comprehensive strategies for remediation and reparation regarding the estimated 25 per cent environmental pollution we have borne over the years.

“We believe that addressing these concerns will further strengthen the collaboration between Bayelsa State and the Federal Government, promoting sustainable development and prosperity for our communities.

“We are eager for the opportunity to engage with you on these matters and explore pathways to mutual growth,”
