Nigerians are outraged over the arraignment of 76 suspects, including 32 minors, for participating in the #EndBadGovernance protests in August.

The defendants, arrested in various states, face charges such as treason and intent to destabilize Nigeria.

The protests, which occurred from August 1 to 10, were against economic hardship and poor governance, with demonstrators demanding reduced governance costs, reinstatement of petrol subsidy, food security, and fiscal discipline.

However, the protests turned violent in some states, leading to looting and vandalism.

The arraignment has sparked controversy, with many condemning the undue detention and arraignment of the defendants, particularly the minors, who appeared unkempt and malnourished in court.

Four of the children collapsed during proceedings and were rushed out of the courtroom.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu granted the protesters bail in the sum of N760 million with two sureties, but many are concerned about the government’s approach to civil dissent.

Civil society groups and rights activists have slammed the police and government over the matter, citing violations of human rights.

Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju criticized the prolonged detention of the protesters, describing it as an abuse of power by the government.

He expressed concerns about the situation, labeling the current administration as “clueless” in handling such matters.

The incident has raised questions about the government’s commitment to protecting the rights of its citizens, particularly minors, and its approach to handling peaceful protests.
