Nigeria international star, Calvin Bassey has opened up about the pivotal moment that led him to represent the Super Eagles instead of England.

In an interview, Bassey reflected on Nigeria’s thrilling 2018 World Cup encounter with Argentina, featuring Lionel Messi’s stunning goal.

That match according to Bassey sparked his desire to play for Nigeria and on the world stage.

Born in Italy to Nigerian parents and raised in England, Bassey had multiple national team options, including Kenya. However, his heart belonged to Nigeria.

Bassey’s commitment solidified in 2021 when he joined the Super Eagles for 2022 World Cup qualifiers, debuting in a tense 0-0 draw against Ghana.

He cited Nigeria’s resilience and determination in the face of adversity as the driving force behind his decision.

Since his debut, Bassey has become an integral part of the Eagles’ lineup, contributing significantly to their AFCON silver medal win.

Bassey said:  “When Nigeria played Argentina, they lost 2-1, but it was a good game,” Bassey told Sky Sports.

“Messi, of course—Messi is Messi, in it—he scored that outrageous goal. I think it was knee, left foot, then right foot. It was top.

“But that was more of a motivation to me to want to play for Nigeria and also play on the big stage.”
