A heated argument between football fans turned deadly in Kyobugombe Trading Centre, Western Uganda, on Sunday, October 27th.
Cyber Reporters gathered that Benjamin Okello, 22, a Manchester United supporter, lost his life after a dispute with an Arsenal fan, identified as Onan.
The clash erupted over celebrations and taunts following Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool.
Okello threw popcorn at Onan, escalating the situation. After the match, the two engaged in a scuffle, resulting in Okello being hit with a stick.
According to Kaharo Sub County Chairperson, the confrontation began in a local video hall where fans gathered to watch the match. “When Liverpool scored an equalizer, Okello started jubilating, angering Onan,” he said.
District Police Commander Joseph Bakaleke confirmed the incident, stating that police received reports of a scuffle between two fans, resulting in one being assaulted and later succumbing to injuries.
Onan, reportedly known for criminal activity in the area, is now the subject of an active police manhunt. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward.
Relatives of Okello demand justice, while police appeal for calm.
“We encourage the relatives to remain calm as we search for the suspect and gather information,” said Bakaleke.
The incident highlights the intense rivalries and passions surrounding football matches.
As the investigation continues, authorities aim to ensure justice is served.
