Lionel Messi, Inter Miami forward and eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has congratulated nominees and winners of the 2024 award via Instagram.
Notably absent from this year’s 30-man shortlist, Messi acknowledged his peers’ achievements.
Several Argentina teammates received recognition, including Emiliano Martinez, who secured the Yachine Award for best goalkeeper for the second consecutive year.
Manchester City’s Rodri surprisingly claimed the top honor, edging out favored Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior.

Messi’s post celebrated his peers: “Congratulations to all winners and nominees… Especially Dibu (Emiliano Martinez), another award for the best goalkeeper. And to Lautaro, Scaloni, and Garnacho.”
The ceremony was marred by controversy surrounding Vinicius Junior.
Former Netherlands midfielder Clarence Seedorf suggested UEFA’s tensions with Real Madrid influenced Vinicius’s chances.
Seedorf expressed disappointment: “Vini Jr. deserves this award… Problems between Real Madrid and UEFA should be separate from a player’s deserving recognition. It’s a shame.”
Vinicius finished as runner-up, with teammate Jude Bellingham claiming third.
The 2024 Ballon d’Or results sparked debate about Messi’s current standing and the politics surrounding football’s top honors.
