NASU, SSANU Begin Nationwide Strike Today

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, have declared an indefinite strike, effective immediately, in response to the Federal Government’s failure to meet their demands.

A statement signed by SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi announced the strike action.

The unions are seeking payment of four months’ withheld salaries, improved remuneration, earned allowances, and implementation of the 2009 agreement.

Despite repeated ultimatums, protests, and warning strikes, the government has not addressed these concerns.

The government’s “No Work, No Pay” policy, introduced in 2022, has led to the withholding of salaries during previous strikes.

According to the union, President Bola Tinubu’s partial release of these salaries earlier this year only benefited academic staff, excluding non-teaching staff.

The unions argue that this selective approach is unjust. Their peaceful protest in July warned of possible shutdowns if withheld salaries remained unpaid.

Cyber Reporters reports that the strike follows a series of unresolved protests and ultimatums.

Despite promises and approvals for payment, including a recent assurance from President Tinubu, no funds have been disbursed.

The unions stress that their members provide essential campus services, such as water, electricity, internet, and security.

In light of this deadlock, SSANU and NASU have instructed members to hold joint congresses on campus to discuss and launch the indefinite strike.

The Joint Action Committee of NASU and SSANU expressed doubts about the government’s commitment to resolving the issue.

The strike’s impact on university operations will be significant, affecting students and staff alike.

Nigeria’s university system has faced repeated disruptions due to labor disputes.

University activities will remain suspended until the dispute is resolved.
