The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority confirmed that the Blue Line train resumed service on Sunday, following a fire that destroyed a portion of the train track on Saturday.

Remember that the Fire Service reported no casualties as emergency personnel were swift to extinguish the fire, which started about 4:12 p.m. on Saturday.

According to LAMATA spokesperson Kolawole Ojelabi, the fire started on a portion of the track near the former NEPA station opposite Eko Bridge in the Apongbon region of Lagos Island.

He acknowledged that “as a result, passenger operations of the Blue Line were disrupted.”

In a statement, Ojelabi stated, “Following the spark, the system isolated the section to allow investigators and engineers from the Independent Power Plant that powers the train to trace the source of the fire.”

“The closed-circuit camera along the portion immediately alerted emergency personnel, who initiated the emergency response process.

“No passengers or personnel on the train were in risk as a result of the fire. Engineers are working tirelessly to replace the burnt cables, and train service is expected to resume Sunday morning.”

LAMATA declared it was “committed to ensuring the safe operation of the Blue Line, West Africa’s first electric-powered rail system.”
