Professor Humphrey Nwosu, a pivotal figure in Nigeria’s electoral history, has passed away.

Born on October 2, 1941, Nwosu served as Chairman of the National Electoral Commission, NEC, now known as the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from 1989 to 1993.

Cyber Reporters gathered that during his tenure, Nwosu oversaw the historic June 12, 1993 election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest presidential election.

Under his leadership, the NEC introduced innovative voting systems, including the Option A4 voting system and the Open Ballot system.

The June 12 election saw Moshood Abiola of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, emerge victorious over Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention, NRC.

However, despite releasing many election results, Nwosu was ordered to halt further announcements by the Babangida regime.

Nwosu’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic process were recently recognized by the House of Representatives, which urged President Bola Tinubu to honor him for conducting the most credible election in Nigeria’s post-independence history.

Nwosu’s legacy as a champion of democracy and free elections will undoubtedly endure.

It was gathered that he passed away in a hospital in Virginia, USA, leaving behind a remarkable impact on Nigeria’s electoral landscape.
