Glasgow, Scotland, has been officially confirmed as the host of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The Scottish city, which previously hosted the Games in 2014, will stage a condensed version of the multi-sport event from July 23 to August 2, 2026.

The decision comes after Victoria, the original host, withdrew due to rising costs.

The Scottish government gave Glasgow the green light last month, and the Commonwealth Games Federation, CGF, made the official announcement on Tuesday.

The 2026 Games will feature a reduced program with 10 sports, down from 19 in the 2022 edition.

Para sports will be fully integrated, with six sports included. Athletics, swimming, gymnastics, cycling, netball, weightlifting, boxing, judo, bowls, and 3×3 basketball will be among the featured sports.

According to the CGF, Glasgow 2026 is expected to deliver over £100 million in inward investment and generate £150 million in economic value added for the region.

CGF chief executive, Katie Sadleir hailed Glasgow 2026 as a “bridge to the Commonwealth Games of tomorrow,” emphasizing a more collaborative, flexible, and sustainable model.

Sadleir said this approach aims to minimize costs, reduce the environmental footprint, and enhance social impact, making it more feasible for countries to host the Games.

The CGF assured that no public funding is required, with Australia contributing to the costs following Victoria’s withdrawal, which was prompted by projected costs exceeding A$6 billion.

This decision marks a significant shift towards a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly Games, increasing the potential pool of future hosts.
