MTN Nigeria Communications Plc has launched a pilot program for paper-based biodegradable eco-friendly subscriber identity module (SIM) cards by its Project Zero targets, which aim to cut GHG emissions and achieve net zero emissions by 2040.

The biodegradable paper-based SIM card is environmentally friendly since it encourages circularity and reduces waste by allowing items to be managed throughout their existence.

Furthermore, the progressive elimination of plastic-based SIM cards enables the company to make a significant contribution to plastic pollution prevention, demonstrating its dedication to always researching new methods to incorporate sustainable practices into its operations.

This effort, spearheaded by a local supplier, exemplifies MTN’s dedication to enabling local businesses and promoting economic growth through long-term relationships.

Adekemi Adisa, General Manager of Sustainability and Shared Value, also spoke: “Our people and the environment where they live drives the innovative measures we take.

The launch of our recyclable SIM cards embodies our commitment to sustainability, encouraging our customers to make eco-friendly choices, reducing waste and paving the way for a more environmentally conscious future for Nigerians.”

This decision is consistent with MTN’s commitment to ‘Doing for the Planet’, which emphasizes eco-responsibility and reduces the company’s environmental footprint through responsible and sustainable waste management methods. As a trial, these eco-friendly SIM cards are available at select MTN outlets in Lagos and Abuja.
