The Nigerian Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, has strongly condemned Libya’s actions in holding the Nigerian Super Eagles and officials hostage at Al Abaq Airport.

This disturbing incident occurred after the team’s aircraft was diverted to another city, causing significant distress and unnecessary delays to the team, officials, and support staff.

Senator Enoh expressed deep concern over the poor treatment, emphasizing that the safety and welfare of the team remain the government’s top priority.

Holding the team hostage violates international sporting protocols and principles of respect and hospitality, he stated.

The Minister assured Nigerians that the Ministry is working closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other stakeholders to ensure the team’s immediate and safe release.

Senator Enoh also called on Libyan authorities to respect international sporting relations and the fundamental rights of athletes and officials traveling for official purposes.

He emphasized that sports diplomacy is a vital tool for fostering global unity, and such incidents should not be allowed to occur again.

He said Nigeria remains committed to strengthening international relations through sports, but will not hesitate to defend the rights and dignity of its athletes and officials when unfairly treated.

The Minister expressed gratitude to the Nigerian public for their patience and support during this challenging time and reassured everyone that every necessary measure is being taken to bring the Super Eagles safely to their destination.

The Nigerian government will not tolerate any form of disrespect or mistreatment toward its players and officials, Senator Enoh reiterated.

He said efforts are underway to resolve the situation swiftly and ensure the team’s safe passage.
