Remove Hidden Levies on Local Petrol, Coalition Urges NNPCL

The Coalition for Energy Reforms and Good Governance Advocacy is calling on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, to remove hidden levies and charges on locally sourced petrol from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

This move, they believe, would make petrol more affordable for Nigerians and alleviate the worsening hardship faced by citizens.

The coalition’s plea comes after the latest increase in petrol pump prices by NNPCL, which sparked widespread outrage among Nigerians.

Many are questioning the reasoning behind the price hike, especially since the product is now being refined locally.

According to the coalition, these hidden levies are unjustified and inflate the cost of locally produced fuel.

They argue that local refineries, like Dangote, could sell fuel at prices as low as ₦400 per litre without these additional charges.

The coalition specifically mentioned that these levies include those from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, which are layered on the crude supply and have no place in local production and sale of petroleum products.

By removing these hidden charges, the coalition hopes to make petrol more affordable for Nigerians and bring relief to the struggling citizens.
