Five individuals are believed to have died as a result of Monday’s gunfire at various local government area (LGA) council secretariats in Rivers State, Cyber Reporters report.

The police have not issued an official statement addressing the violence that has engulfed several LGAs across the state. However, anonymous sources confirmed that the majority of the deaths were young people who were purportedly loyal to the state governor, Sir Siminialayi Fubara.

According to Vanguard, the continuing gunfire at the LGA offices has caused terror in the nearby community. According to reports, by Monday afternoon, about five people had been killed in four local government districts, and three councils—Eleme, Emohua, and Ikwerre—had been set on fire.

The violence apparently erupted as newly elected local government chairmen, who were sworn in by the governor on Sunday, came at their respective council secretariats. They came upon a group of youngsters who were hostile to their election and claimed to be there to clean the premises for the former council chairmen, whose terms had just expired.

The situation developed into shootings, resulting in several gunshot wounds and the alleged deaths of five people: one in Khana LGA, three in Oyibo LGA, and one in Ahoada-East LGA.

Authorities have neglected to respond to the incidents, leaving citizens and local leaders concerned about the violence.
