The Lagos State Government has announced intentions to ban the circulation of single-use plastics and sachet water beginning in January 2025, Cyber Reporters report.

Tokunbo Wahab, the state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, confirmed the imminent ban on Styrofoam and single-use plastics (SUPs) for packaging at a stakeholders’ meeting on Thursday, October 3.

Wahab explained that the action is part of the government’s aim to implement legislative standards for managing plastic trash, to create a healthier and more sustainable environment.

However, stakeholders have urged the government to consider a phased implementation rather than an outright ban. They believe this will ensure better compliance and ease the burden during current economic challenges.

Tokunbo Wahab announced on November 17 that the Ministry is carefully preparing and implementing a comprehensive action plan to address all environmental challenges.

According to a statement he signed, flooding, noise pollution, and unlawful drainage blockage are major concerns affecting individuals’ lives and livelihoods and must be addressed effectively.

“To guarantee that these environmental concerns are effectively resolved, many departments within the Ministry will collaborate with relevant authorities. Furthermore, public awareness initiatives and stakeholder interactions will be carried out to encourage community participation and adherence to environmental standards,” he stated.

Wahab urged all residents and stakeholders to join hands in the collective endeavor to maintain a clean, safe, and sustainable environment for everyone in Lagos State.
