Italian referee, Fabio Maresca has been barred from officiating UEFA Champions League (UCL) games for reportedly threatening to kill a player,Cyber Reporters report.
Maresca might potentially face a one-month suspension from refereeing in Italy’s Serie A.
According to Corriere della Sera, the incident occurred during the clash between Kuwait SC and Al-Arabi, when Maresca was accosted by Khaled Al Murshed after clashing with each other.
While the referee did not make much of it, Adnan Abdul, an Al Arabi board member, said that Maresca threatened to ‘murder the footballer’.
Maresca, who was chosen as the fourth official for the match between PSV and Sporting CP, was replaced by his compatriot, Daniele Doveri, in a game that ended 1-1 on Tuesday night.
Marco Guida, an Italian referee, officiated the game, assisted by Ciro Carbone and Giorgio Peretti.
