The House of Representatives has opened an investigation into claims of bribery against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Correctional Service, Cyber Reporters report.

This comes just days after social critic Martins Otse aka VeryDarkMan released an alleged audio clip of crossdresser Idris Okuneye aka Bobrisky claiming the EFCC dropped money laundering charges against him after accepting a N15 million bribe. Read here.

While speaking in plenary today, September 26, lawmaker Patrick Umoh of Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal Constituency, Akwa Ibom State, sponsored a motion expressing concern about VeryDarkMan’s widely circulated publication against the EFCC and the NCS, claiming the allegations are damaging.

He stressed Nigeria’s unfavorable reputation as a corrupt country and the need for immediate action.

“The publication alleges that the EFCC dropped money laundering charges against Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky upon collection of the sum of N15,000, 000. The publication alleges that Idris Okuneye, upon conviction for abuse and defacing of the Naira, by the court, did not serve his time at the Nigeria Correctional Service, but was lodged outside the confines of the service.

We are alarmed by the damaging claims leveled against Nigeria’s critical law enforcement organizations, the EFCC and the NCS, which were formed by these hallowed chambers to fight correction and incarcerate people guilty of crimes for correctional reasons, respectively.”He said:

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who presided over the plenary session, referred the subject to the Committees on Financial Crimes and Reformatory Institutions and directed the members of the committee to submit their findings within three legislative weeks.
