The Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe has officially forbidden its employees from engaging in cryptocurrency mining and trading during working hours.
This directive was issued through a circular dated September 18, 2024, and signed by Adamu Tela, Deputy Director of Administration.
It emphasized the importance of employees focusing on their responsibilities and expressed rising concern about the distraction generated by cryptocurrency-related activities.
“I am directed to caution all members of staff to desist from mining and all forms of related crypto trading activities while working,” the circular stated in part.
A number of complaints from patients and their families, who were upset that staff members were being sidetracked by cryptocurrency activities while on duty, led to the prohibition.
Tela also issued a warning, stating that any employee found to be in violation of the instruction would face consequences.
“Management will not hold back from taking severe measures in compliance with Public Service Rules against any employee found to be involved in this kind of trading while on the job.
The statement further stated that “security officers, ACTU, and SERVICOM have been deployed to ensure compliance.”
Employees were also exhorted to give priority to their tasks and carry them out seriously and diligently.
The decision was made in response to Nigerians’ increased interest in cryptocurrencies, as sites like Not Coin and Dawg became more well-known because to their mining potential.
