The Nurses and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, NMCN, has reopened its portal for verifying nurses and midwives’ certificates.

The Council’s portal resumed operations on Saturday after being disabled in December 2023.

However, the NMCN has not published an official comment regarding the current developments.

This comes after the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) issued a request to the Nigerian government to satisfy the nurses’ long-standing demands.

NANNM stated that to prevent a strike, the government must meet those requests within 15 days. The ultimatum would have gone into effect today, Monday, September 16th, 2024.

The association is requesting the quick reopening of the Nurses’ Verification Portal, an improved Nurses’ Salary Structure, and the establishment of a Department of Nursing, among other things.

The National Assembly has twice requested the NMCN to open its site and begin verifying nurses and midwives under its previous norms, awaiting the outcome of a House Committee on Health Institutions probe.

Philip Eteng, National Secretary of the Graduate Nurses Association of Nigeria (GNAN), acknowledged that negotiations between the Ministry of Health and Nigerian nurses and midwives were still ongoing.
