Abuja-based lawyer and human rights activist, Maxwell Opara has taken President Bola Tinubu to court for allegedly extending the tenure of Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mr Kayode Egbetokun.

The lawyer petitioned the Federal High Court in Abuja to prevent Egbetokun from representing himself as the IGP.

Opara claims that Egbetokun, who will be 60 years old on September 4, 2024, cannot continue to serve as IGP.

Recall that following the IGP’s term issue, Force spokeswoman Muyiwa Adejobi stated on Friday that Tinubu did not prolong his tenure.

He stated that the President approved the law controlling the office’s duration, as needed.

However, Opara sought the court to rule that a future modified statute cannot retroactively reinstate an appointment terminated by operation of law.

There is no set date for the suit’s hearing.
