The Nigeria Police Force has arrested several police officers from the Zone 16 Command in Yenagoa, Bayelsa, for their involvement in a N3 million extortion case.

Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, confirmed this in a statement posted on his official X (previously Twitter) account.

This occurred after Kelechi Isaac, a Nigerian citizen, posted a video on social media accusing police officers in Bayelsa State of extorting N3 million from him at gunpoint.

Adejobi claimed that the police officers in question had been captured after an internal inquiry and would be transported to the Force Headquarters (FHQ) in Abuja.

He wrote: “The policemen involved in this case of extortion of ₦3 million have been arrested. The men are attached to Zone 16 Command in Yenagoa. The command has been asked to produce the men at the FHQ,”

He also reiterated the Force Headquarters’ commitment to cleaning up the police system and ensuring justice is delivered in all situations brought to its attention.

Isaac, who is originally from Nguru Nworie in Imo state’s Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area but now lives in Ghana, said he had gone to Nigeria to attend a friend’s traditional marriage ceremony in Bayelsa State when the incident occurred. Isaac claimed he was traveling back from the wedding ceremony with two buddies when five police officers stopped them. According to him, the operatives identified as the “IGP’s Special Squad” and drove a white pickup truck that was not tagged.
