The Nigeria Police Force has issued a fresh summon to the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC, Joe Ajaero.

Ajaero was summoned alongside NLC’s General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja for questioning over alleged “criminal intimidation”.

This comes barely two days after Ajaero honored a previous police invitation.

In a letter dated August 28, 2024, signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Ibitoye Rufus Alajide, the duo is required to report to the Deputy Inspector General of Police at the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja on Thursday, September 5, 2024.

The letter reads, “In furtherance of investigations into the alleged case of criminal intimidation, conducts likely to cause breach of public peace, and malicious damage to properties in which your name featured, you are requested to come along with Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja for an interview.”

The head of media, NLC, Benson Upah, confirmed that the organization received a letter from the police on Friday, August 30.

Ajaero’s latest police summons follows his earlier visit to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, accompanied by human rights lawyer Femi Falana.

The initial invitation related to allegations of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.

Ajaero had been scheduled to meet with the Force Intelligence Response Team, IRT, on August 20 but requested more information about the allegations, leading to a rescheduled meeting for Thursday.

The investigation seems to be linked to a police search of the NLC secretariat in Abuja on August 7, where officers sought materials related to the #EndBadGovernance protests.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, later mentioned a connection between the NLC headquarters and a mastermind behind the Sudan conflict, adding complexity to the situation.
