Tragedy struck on the Ore-Ondo highway in Ondo State when a devastating auto crash claimed the lives of 16 people at Ajue community.

The tragic accident, which occurred at 8 p.m., involved a Toyota Bus and a truck that burst into flames after a head-on collision.

Eyewitnesses attribute the crash to reckless overtaking by one of the drivers.

The victims were burnt beyond recognition, while three others suffered severe injuries and two escaped unharmed.

The Ondo Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ibitoye Samuel, confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the accident.

The rescue operation concluded at 11 p.m.

According to Samuel, “The preliminary investigation indicated overspeeding and wrongful overtaking.”
Ibitoye identified overspeeding as a major cause of accidents on Nigeria roads.

The victims’ remains have been moved to the Specialists Hospital mortuary in Ondo town, where they will be held pending identification and autopsy procedures.
