The Hamas militant group launched an unprecedented attack on Israel, firing thousands of rockets and infiltrating the heavily fortified border from Gaza, catching Israel off guard.

Both sides suffered casualties, with more than 700 Israelis, including civilians, killed and over 2,150 wounded. Additionally, more than 400 Palestinians were reported killed in retaliatory Israeli airstrikes in Gaza.

Several U.S. citizens were killed in the attacks, and the U.S. National Security Council confirmed this. The U.S. expressed support for Israel and pledged to provide additional equipment and resources to the Israel Defense Forces, CBS News reports.

The United Nations Secretary-General condemned the Hamas attacks and called for maximum restraint, emphasizing that violence cannot solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Hamas governs the Gaza Strip, which has a population of over 2 million people. Israel and the U.S. consider Hamas a terrorist organization.

Israel has maintained a blockade of Gaza since 2007, citing security concerns. This blockade has had a significant impact on Gaza’s economy.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas has a long history, with periodic flare-ups of violence over the years.

President Joe Biden expressed support for Israel, and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced the provision of additional equipment and resources to Israel.
