Owing to rumors of a possible merger between Peter Obi and three other major Presidential candidates in the just concluded 2023 elections, National secretary of the Labour Party, Umar Farouk, and Tai Obasi, media aide to Peter Obi, have tendered a public statement, debunking the rumors.

This is coming after the purported news of merger with the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and his counterpart in the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso hit the internet.

The statement read:

There have been reports in some section of the media that Atiku, Kwankwaso and Obi have opened preliminary discussions on a possible merger with the ultimate goal of setting up a formidable opposition platform capable of wrestling power from the ruling party.

The national secretary also reiterated that while the party respects the privacy of its principal, it would not be merging with any political group.

When Obi’s media aide was contacted on the issue, he revealed that the trio may have a good relationship, the Labour Party would patiently wait for the judgment of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

In his words:

“Those who are close to Obi know he has no enemy, except for those fighting him unnecessarily. He is a Nigerian who will always interact with any other Nigerian for the good of Nigeria. But with the level of margin, I can tell you that for now, there is nothing like the merger you talked about,” the aide said.

He also stressed that while Peter Obi respects the political ideologies of both men, it is too early to speak up such rumors of a merger when the court proceedings are still on.

Both Atiku and Kwakwaso have not released any statements about the rumored merger.
