The Lagos State Government has called on young residents to consider enrolling in the military, emphasizing the importance of serving their state and country while gaining valuable skills and experience.
Secretary to the State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, made this appeal during a quarterly meeting with the Police Community Relations Committee in Ikeja, emphasizing that national security is a collective responsibility.
Salu-Hundeyin expressed concern that indigenous youths are not taking advantage of the opportunity to serve in the military, as evidenced by the low turnout during the last recruitment drive.
According to Salu-Hundeyin, the Federal Government has allocated 150 slots to each state for military recruitment, but Lagos State has been underrepresented.
She said joining the military is a vital service to the state and nation, ensuring national security and equal representation.

Salu-Hundeyin noted that Lagos youths’ reluctance to join the military would ultimately short-change the state, emphasizing that military enrollment is crucial for the state’s development and security.
By joining the military, Lagos youths can contribute to the state’s security and development while serving their country.
Salu-Hundeyin said: “We discovered that in the military in Nigeria, Lagos State has been seriously short-changed. We hardly have people there. So, we are looking at this opportunity now, that it should not escape indigenes again.
“The military is about the security of a nation, and the security of any nation must be everybody’s business.
“It should not be for a particular group only, but because everybody cannot wear uniform, the government, in its wisdom, now says those of you that want to do this job, you will apply.
“Unfortunately, in Lagos State, our children don’t like to join the military. They don’t see any reason they should be part of the army. If your state does not participate, you are short-changing your state.”
