The Nigerian senate has urged on the Federal Government to enhance budgetary allocation to federal universities in the 2025 budget to take care of the teething problems of Nigerian universities.
The legislators also decided to order the appropriate committee to either immediately stop the nation’s growing brain drain crisis or mediate between the ministers of finance, education, and other pertinent ministries.
This resolution is the result of a motion made by lawmaker Anthony Okorie, who expressed concern about the widening issue of brain drain and the consequent substantial exodus of highly educated professionals from Nigeria, particularly in the academic sector, in search of better working conditions. This exodus has exacerbated the skill gap in the nation’s workforce.
Okorie also voiced worry about the inadequate pay and working circumstances that Nigerian academics endure.
He claims that since it was last examined more than 15 years ago, it has remained one of the world’s poorest and is the reason behind the ongoing exodus of skilled workers from the ivory towers of the country to other nations.
The legislators also ordered the relevant committee or senate to communicate with the ministers of finance, education, and other pertinent ministries, or else take prompt action to halt the nation’s growing brain drain crisis.
