A violent outbreak marred the Ijaw Youths Council, IYC, Eastern Zone elections held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, leaving at least three people feared dead and several others injured.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing gunshots, which sent residents fleeing for safety.

The Rivers Police Command in a statement confirmed the incident, describing the shooting as “senseless.”

However, the command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, did not confirm the number of casualties.

In response to the violence, Iringe-Koko disclosed that Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, swiftly deployed tactical units to the scene.

He added that although the perpetrators had escaped by the time police arrived, Disu has ordered his team to track them down and bring them to justice.

The exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, but reports suggest multiple fatalities and injuries.

He said: “Consequently, the Commissioner of Police Rivers State has swiftly dispatched Tactical Teams to the scene, but before the arrival of the Police, the perpetrators have run into their hiding places.

“The Commissioner of Police has given marching orders to track down the perpetrators and bring them to face the full wrath of the law.”
