Nigeria have started the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on a shaky note following their 1-1 draw with Lesotho at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

The Super Eagles were without some key players including captain Ahmed Musa.

The Sivasspor of Turkey star was not invited for the game due to injury as striker Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze were also left out.

While some Nigerians are calling for Musa to retire, others have called on the former Leicester City striker to return to the squad.

The Super Eagles take on Zimbabwe in their second game at the ongoing qualifiers in Rwanda and anything short of victory will leave their qualification chances in jeopardy

Why Ahmed Musa must return

The Super Eagles captain is the most experienced player at Jose Peseiro’s disposition. He was part of the squad that won the AFCON title in 2013.

Musa is the most-capped Nigerian footballer of all time with 108 appearances and also holds the record of most World Cup goals by a Nigerian having netted four times

He has been the unifier in the squad and his presence means so much to the team.

Musa has been able to relate with fans and the media more than any of the players in the current squad, so his presence matters a lot.

He team-captain is just 31 and he sill has a lot to offer the team especially now that they are struggling to get result in important matches.
