Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey has joined Serie A side AS Roma on a season-long loan, with the Italian club holding an option to make the move permanent.

The 28-year-old Jamaica international will spend the 2025–26 campaign at the Stadio Olimpico, following an agreement reported to be worth €2m (£1.7m) for the loan, with a €23m (£19.8m) purchase clause.

Bailey joined Villa from Bayer Leverkusen in 2021 in a £25m transfer and went on to make 144 appearances, scoring 22 goals. He enjoyed a prolific 2023–24 season, netting 14 times in 52 appearances across all competitions. However, he struggled for form last term, scoring just twice in 38 matches.

The winger signed a new contract at Villa Park in February 2024, extending his stay until 2027. But with Villa seeking to ease financial pressures, the deal provides flexibility for both clubs.

Bailey becomes the first Jamaican player in AS Roma’s history and is their second signing from the Premier League this summer, following the arrival of Brighton striker Evan Ferguson.

In a statement, Roma said: “AS Roma are delighted to announce the signing of Leon Bailey from Aston Villa. The winger joins the club on loan with an option to buy.”

“Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Bailey moved to Europe at the age of 13 and has since represented Genk, Bayer Leverkusen, and Aston Villa. He has made 377 senior appearances and scored 76 goals across domestic and international competitions.”

Bailey will wear the number 31 shirt for Roma.
