Boxing Gets Included in 2028 Los Angeles Olympics

The International Olympic Committee unanimously approved the inclusion of boxing in the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

The sport was not included when the 2022 Olympic schedule was first established.

However, the IOC granted World Boxing provisional accreditation as the sport’s worldwide governing body last month before voting on its inclusion at the current session in Greece.

“I thank you for the approval of having boxing back. We can look forward to a great boxing tournament,” outgoing IOC president Thomas Bach said.

Boxing has been featured at every Olympics since 1904, with the exception of 1912, however the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has managed the sport in the last two Games after the International Boxing Association (IBA) was suspended in 2019 due to governance, economic, officiating, and ethical concerns.

The Russian-led IBA was then stripped of its status in June 2023 for failing to enact reforms.

The IOC and the IBA fought during last year’s Olympics in Paris over the participation of two boxers, Algeria’s Imane Khelif and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting.

The IBA barred the fighters from competing at the 2023 World Championships, claiming they had passed gender eligibility checks, but the IOC allowed them to compete and both won gold medals in their weight classes.
