Bayern Munich has paid a lasting tribute to the legendary Franz Beckenbauer by retiring the Number Five jersey.

The decision was announced by the club on Sunday, in honor of the iconic defender who passed away on January 7, 2024.

Beckenbauer, affectionately known as “Der Kaiser,” is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time.

His impressive career was marked by numerous accolades, including winning the FIFA World Cup, the European Champions Cup, and the Ballon d’Or.

As a player, Beckenbauer led Germany to victory in the 1972 European Championships and the 1974 World Cup. During his time at Bayern, he won three consecutive Bundesliga titles and three European Cups.

Beckenbauer’s impact extended beyond his playing career, as he went on to have two successful managerial spells at Bayern, winning the Bundesliga in 1994 and the UEFA Cup in 1996.

He also served as the club’s president.

In a heartfelt tribute, Bayern Munich wrote on X, “Forever our Kaiser. In memory of Franz Beckenbauer, FC Bayern will never again assign the number 5 jersey.”

This gesture ensures that Beckenbauer’s legacy will continue to be celebrated by the club and its fans.
